Is spouse name on passport mandotory for L2 visa ?

I have a question regarding L2 visa processing. We are recently married & I travelled USA. Me & my husband both have not added spouse name in our passport. Now I would like to process my husbands L2.. Is addition of spouse name must for L2 visa processing ? How easy it is to add the name. Now I am here .. so is it mandory for me also to update the passport. My husband is already worked in usa & holding a valid L1 .. will addition of spouse name will keep his visa valid ? do they continue the same passport & reissue the new one with old pages ?
