Questions regarding EAD for L2

Hello,

My wife was working on L1 visa. She completed her assignment and then switched to L2 visa and is currently on L2. She has applied for her EAD. She got a receipt number for the case. Now, my question is she has not received her EAD card BUT she has the receipt number. Is it possible to start working even if she does not have EAD card? OR should she wait till her EAD comes in hand.

No physical EAD card in hand with a valid date = No work.

This applies to everyone in ANY status whatsoever and includes new EADs, original EAD renewals etc etc.
