L1 Extension multiple times

I came to US on an L1 blanket visa which expired after one and half years of my stay and subsequently my company filed an extension. I got a two years extension. After a few months I went back to India for about nine months. Now the visa is expiring again this July. Should I file for another extension or a fresh L1 visa? I guess my question would be if my period of total stay is less than 5 years can I apply for L1 extension multiple times or a fresh petition is mandated?
