L2 visa and work permit

Hello,

My wife is working for a reputed IT company in India. This company sent my wife to the US on L1B visa. Her visa is valid till Dec 09.
I'm working for an IT company in India and had applied for H1B this year. My name did not get selected in the lottery so I cannot come to the US.

It's been more than a year that we have not seen each other in person and it's really bad.

I'm planning to go to the US on L2 visa. I heard from someone that I can work there after getting a work permit. I have the following questions:

a) If I go to the US on L2 visa, how do I need to apply for work permit ?

b) Is this work permit called "EAD" ? Could you tell me the full form ?

c) How long does it take for one to get an EAD after coming to the US ?

d) Is it that after I get the EAD, my half of the green card process is complete as against the H1B holders who apply for GC and need to wait atleast for 2-3 years to get the EAD ?

e) What kind of work can one do when they come on L2 and get the EAD ?

---You have to physically present in US to apply an EAD. You have to visit USCIS.GOV website for filing procedure.

---This is different category. Its an EAD based on L1. In short, your status is valid until L1 is valid and L1 visa holder is in valid status.

e) What kind of work can one do when they come on L2 and get the EAD ?
