Work permit for L2

Hi Senior memebers,
My wife came to U.S on L2 one month back. In regard to this, I have few queries-
1. When she can apply for work permit?
2. What is the procedure? Can we do it online?
3. Does L2 eligible to apply for SSN immediately after entering into states?

1)can apply now..i.e soon she is in US on L2

SSN is based on federal law and L2 can apply for SSN upon entry and need not wait for EAD card approval. They can only work after getting the EAD card.

I am not sure if law differs in different states but here is one case.

One of my friend's wife(L2) went to SSN office in California.
SSA denied SSN to her and asked her to apply for TIN (tax identification number) as she doesn't have EAD.

It depends on the knowledge level of the SSA officer. The document from SSA clearly says SSN can be issued.

Hi Neeraj,

I stay in California and applied for my wife's SSN last week . She is on L2 visa . The fact that I came to know is that if the marriage happened before your L1 Visa was applied then there is no need to get EAD for SSN . But if the marriage happened after your L1 was stamped then EAD is required to apply for SSN .
So answers to your questions are
1. When she can apply for work permit? Anytime after entering USA
2. What is the procedure? Can we do it online? Yes EAD can be done online at uscis website

Did your friend's wife had a marriage certificate when she went to get her SSN . Thats the only thing that the consuler checked in my wife's case

Marriage certificate is one of the important documents required in case of L2 and H4 stamping. So, I dont think she came in USA without that.

Is it possible for an L2 Visa Holder to continue in job, even if the L1 Visa holder moves out of US.

L2 is dependent visa of L1, If L1 moves out of US then L2 holder must leave too.

Not sure what your case is but I have seen 2 cases if L1 is going on short leave then it is possible for L2 to continue. But if L1 is going out for longer period then it puts L2 on illegal status. However, I am not sure if its valid.
