change of status from L2 to F1 visa

i am on L2 visa which is expiring on Oct 10 2009,i want to stay here for another 6 months to complete my Licensce exam to work .So i approached a college to change my visa status to f1 visa.
My quesion is
1) can i stay in USA in my pending status ? My husband wants to go back before his 1-94 expires.
2)how long it will take to change of status ?

pls help me......i desperately needs help

1) Yes. But if COS denied, illegal stay counted from Oct 11th or from the day your husband leaves, whichever comes first.
2) Couple of months.
