Passport/Visa Expiry

Hello,

My US L1 Visa will be expiring in May 2010 and passport will be expiring in August 2010..

I think it is better to apply for the extension of passport now. If I do that wil I have to go for stamping for my new passport ?

Also in case I want to change my name in the passport , do I need to go for stamping with the new passport ?
