L2 visa just married but passport still in maiden/ex husbands surname

Hi everyone,

I'm a complete Newbie in this Forum and trying to figure everything out here including the whole process.

My other half is currently in the process of gathering his Documents for his L1 visa. In order for me to accompany him we will need to get married to get the L2 visa for myself (which is not an issue, we are living together for the last 7 years). My current passport is still valid until 2022 and it states my current surname which is my ex husbands surname. Would I need to change my passport and therefore my surname to my by then married name in order for the L2 visa? Or would it be sufficient to have my current passport, decree absolut, new marriage certificate to get the L2?

You do not need to change your name (surname) if you don't want to (or want to carry the same ex-husband surname).

But if you are thinking to change the name in future then I would suggest to get it done before you get your visa.

Thank you. Only reason I'm asking is because its a major headache to get my passport re-issued with a new surname. I would first need to get my decree absolut approved in my home country, then my new marriage approved and then I could apply for a new passport which in total probably would take anything between 6 to 12 months.

Not sure which country do you belong to, But you'll still need those documents (divorced decree & marriage certificate) to prove that you are divorced your ex-husband & now married to the primary L1 holder & the L1 holder is not doing human trafficking.
