Dependent (L2) passport renewal post Bio-metric

Hi All,
I have booked my L1-B Individual appointment & dependent visa appointment.
My son's passport is expiring on Jul-2020. I was planning to renew my son's passport post visa interview, but prior to travel.
I am hearing that, visa expiry date could depend on the passport expiry date.
So, I would like to renew my son's passport and get the visa on his renewed passport.

1) My Son is 5 years old, applying for Dependent (L2) visa along with me
1) We have already taken biometric with my son's old passport in Chennai.
2) And I have scheduled the visa interview on 16-Sep-2020 in US-Consulate Chennai.

Please guide me what are my options

1. Can I go ahead with my son's current passport which is expiring in 2020 and still get the visa for 3 years ( L2 dependent)?
2. Or Can I renew the passport thru tatkal and go for a visa interview with a new passport ( I have already taken bio-metric)

I am in a similar situation. Please see my post. In my case, I am the core applicant and my passport is getting expired in July 2021 where in I have an visa valid till July 2022. I have already paid fees scheduled my interview on next month end. Curious to know what have you got as a reply from someone on your son's case. Thanks.

crv1008 I spoke to my attorney and consulate customer support as well. They have suggested going ahead with existing (current) passport and renew it before traveling.
