I-797 for L2

Dear All
I am going to apply for L2 soon. I just want to know do I need to include the I-797 in my visa file? Is it got to be the original or a copy should be okay?
I have had different comments on I-797. Some says that it is no longer required and some reckons that it is a mandatory doc.
