Why do I need to be present in the US when my employer files for L1 extension?

My immigration dept told me that I need to be physically present in the US when they file for US extension of my L1 visa, even though I will not need to appear before them. Why do I need to be present in the USA then?

I guess because for extension they need to show your current status & I94.
