  • Has anyone *""actually""" had their L2 and EAD renewed recently?

I've been sifting through loads of websites and apps to try to get information on other peoples' timelines on L2 and EAD renewals for a month and haven't been able to find a single example of L2 approvals since late last year. Has anyone here got a completed timeline for a recent L2 and EAD renewal, or has USCIS just not processed any of them in 2020?

Timeline so far for L1/L2/EAD renewal at Texas SC:

    Received: mid-Sept 2020
L1 approved: Dec 2020 (after RFE and PP)
Biometrics for L2: Late Feb 2021

I guess most of the L1 holders switched to 485-EAD - hence no one is really waiting for L2 renewal & L2 EAD anymore.

My wife's L1A and my L2 and EAD were filed on December 15th. Hers was done through premium processing and was approved December 29th. I recieved my receipt mid January with a receipt date of December 15th. I still have no update and can't ask about it until about August/September. I am doubtful they are processing any L2/EAD renewals for spouses in the dependent category since we are not a high priority and can stay without an immediate renewal. For me this meant closing my little internet business. It also means I can't renew my driver's license. I am thankful we were able to stay and keep going through Covid, but I do wish I could drive:-)

That's correct. Its low priority & hence a long wait time. Earlier government was not in support of having dependent work in USA & impact US employment market.

        Unfortunately, yes.

No, you can still renew your DL, based on your pending L2 application.

Also not yet successful, but waiting for I-539+I-765 approval since mid-October.

Agree with Libra_14 on this one -- I went to MVA (Maryland) about 2 weeks ago with my I-539 receipt notice. They had to do a manual SAVE (whatever that is, basically sent my info to a supervisor for further checking) and extended my licence for 8 months.

Hope this helps and good luck!!
I'm an L2 non-immigrant. My most recent I-539 and I-765 were submitted mid-Oct 2020, Texas SC and approved early August 2021.
Make sure to sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. USPS sent back my first EAD and it took 5 months to get it re-mailed in 2018-19.

Unfortunately not in Virginia. I have been back and forth with the DMV a few times. They need my approved 797. The receipt is not sufficient. I also don't qualify for the undocumented license they just started in January, since I am in fact documented. I am sure every state is different.

https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/...doc_status.pdf - Please refer to the last section of this page - a 485 receipt notice is all what they need.

Also, do not ask for REAL ID, just ask for DL.

Just sharing my experience so far

L1/L2 renewal filed in April 2020 (Texas Service Center)
L1 approval received in June 2020
EAD filed in June2020 (California Service Center)
EAD expedite request filed in Jul 2020
EAD expedite denied in Sep 2020
L2 expedite denied in Jan 2021
L2 biometric appointment completed in March2021 (this week)

                Conclusion
11 months waiting on L2 renewal
9 months waiting on EAD renewal
despite the fact that primary applicant's extension was approved 9 months ago.

USEH I'm guessing you filed I-539 and I-765 which is typical for L2+EAD extension (though I-485 might also be the case in case you applied for permanent residency). 2nd page on that doc also has the following -- definitely worth challenging DMV:
"USCIS form I-797 receipt or approval notice for an I-539 or and I-129 petition displaying applicant’s name"

aj12 Thanks for sharing your timeline!! I'm sorry to hear you are facing such crazy processing times, but at least you got biometrics done which is a milestone.

I actually contacted the DMV today based on what Libra said. Unfortunately, our lawyer has gone MIA and won't return calls or emails so I am appreciative of that advice.

I was told that the receipt is all I need BUT its up to the DMV staffer if they accept it or not. Apparently they had a lot of fraud when they went from special paper to regular paper for the receipt notices. If they don't, ask for the supervisor. If the supervisor says no, try a different DMV. Coming from Canada I find this quite strange, but I appreciated their honesty. I have emailed the person who rejected me to see if they can get me an appt before the end May. Currently, the closest appt is the end of May. I'll keep this updated for any future members that have similar situations.

A lot of other L2 renewals sent to Texas appear to have started getting biometrics around February, so the question now is how long it takes afterwards to process. My attorney said two months, but given so few appear to have been approved, it might just be guesswork. Hopefully it's just a formality when the L1 is already approved and the background check comes in clean, but you never know with USCIS.

Sooo because I have too much time on my hands, I've been monitoring ~1,045 cases around my own reference range received mid-October in Texas. Here is an overview:

                        226 of them are I-539 (~22%)
-- 2 approved: expedite request was approved on 3/5/21 and cases approved 3/25/21. I could not match a related I-765 so might have been change of status or something
-- 54 (24% of I-539s) show "fingerprints taken": 25 in November, 7 in Dec, 18 in Feb and 4 in March -- conclusion: there is no direct link between doing biometrics and getting approval
                        -- 9 expedite requests denied

                        55 I-765s (~5%)
                        -- 1 denied
-- 10 approved, most in January (status card mailed/delivered, it doesn't say I-765 so I went by the wording on my previous approved case)
                        -- 6 expedite requests denied
-- 6 show "fingerprints taken", so they are most likely linked to green card applications and not L2/H

Oh god, I guess we're going to have to hope that they're not all L2 i539s, or that there's going to be a glut of processing now that they should be getting vaccinated and USCIS is reopening offices on June 4th. I'm getting kind of sick of being treated like this, to be honest. I've lost almost 40% of my household earnings into USCIS's black hole, with no idea of when I'll get a reprieve and no way to leave the country either.

USEH - I'm not sure if you're already renewed your DL but if not then you can try this DMV at Arlington DMV, 4150 South Four Mile Run Drive, Arlington, VA 22206. I renewed based on the receipt notice.

Thanks. The soonest appt I could get was April 24th. I'll update this post once I find out.
