Hello, I am looking to ever my l1 visa, which expires on Aug, 5,2021 can someone help me understand what is u petition extension? My company says they will file L1 individual to keep me extended. How is this different?

Visa is merely used for the purpose of flying & entering into USA.
Petition (I129 in case of blanket or I797 in case of individual) is what gives you authority to be able to work within USA.
By filing L1 individual extension - your company will give you extension to be able to continue working without needing a new visa.
