  • First name in Visa- FNU

    hi,

my issue is my first name in the Visa is printed as FNU.

    Details
    First name : Rita
    Last Name : Mandera

The above names have been printed together in the "Surname" field in the L2 visa instead of the "Given Name"field which has "FNU" (the acronym for First Name Unknown)
However in my passport, SSN (which we have applied and got) has my First name as Rita and Last name as Mandera respectively, which is correct
The current issue is, when we tried to apply for my Driving license, they
cannot accept as the VISA says the Given name as FNU which does not tally
with my name in the social security register.

At the outset, the name in my VISA is not right and has to be changed.

Also how should i do the necessary changes in my visa as i got my visa in India and currently i am in the US.

    Kindly help.

    Hema

If you had filled out the I-94 with the name as needed you would have been fine.

Get your passport corrected by noting an observation saying that your first name ix X and last name Y. Next time you travel, fill the I-94 according to the correction and not the visa name.

The DL office verifies the I-94 data and works off of it to issue the DL. Until then, you have to live with your problems or get your SSA record corrected to read the name as in the I-94 with FNU and FULL NAME.

      thanks for your reply.

In case i change my name, i have already opened my bank accounts with the SSN as proof, if i change now it would affect my credit history.
also my passport and SSN has my name correct, it is only in my Visa that my name has been wrong.
In the I-94 my given and family name is also provided appropriately.

You are NOT changing your name. If you say name change, it is a totally different process.

Correcting the FN, LN has no impact on the credit history. That is the last thing you should worry about as your SSN number is the primary key and it remains the same throughout your life unless for some exceptional situations.

I've no other ideas if your I-94 reflects the correct name, DL should go through fine. Try some other DL office in the city or neighboring city.
