  • Wondering about L2 child dependent driver’s license

Hi all, doing some investigation about whether my 17yo daughter can (begin to) learn to drive and get a licence in Idaho on her L2 (child/dependent) visa?

we are Australians now living in Boise Idaho and whilst my wife and I have our SSNs and drivers licenses I know there are more restrictions on kids L2 than my spouse - eg my wife can work but the kids won’t be able to until they get their EADs in the I140 and Greencard process we have underway.

We got ITIN SSN numbers for the kids for bank accounts and for our tax but I’m unsure about the requirements of the DMV.

anyone experienced in this who could give me some insight?

    thanks In advance.

Yes, people who are in legal status who are not eligible for an SSN are eligible for a driver's license in every state. I think she will have to get a letter from the SSA saying that she is not eligible for an SSN.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

You just need to complete this form and bring it with you to the DMV:

      https://itd.idaho.gov/wp-content/upl...3/3521fill.pdf

Note well the part about not signing it until you're standing in front of the examiner (or have it notarized).

You won't be eligible for a star card (RealID) and her license will be restricted to not being valid after her status expires.

Thank you both for these informative replies.
I will take this form to the DMV at an appointment and kick the process off.

About Idaho, I'm not sure we have guys in Minnesota who are 17 years old and already working in courier delivery in their cars. They work after school because where they work, the schedule is very loose. It is very cool that there are companies that provide delivery jobs also on a freelance basis, it is useful both for students and schoolchildren, as well as for people who are looking for a job, for example.
