  • Managerial role to Functional Manager

    Hi,

I am playing a managerial role for more than 8 years with my company which is a large IT MNC based out of India. Last two years I am responsible for a large relationship directly supervising 10 senior program managers who are managing teams of various sizes (10-20 members). My employer is offering me a role in US that is functional manager in nature. I wont be managing a team but instead would be managing an important function for the organization in US. The recommendation has been to file an L1A for this purpose.

While going through the requirement, I understand that I have to submit evidence for my qualifying experience in last one year. Like I said I have been managing a big account and a team with clear managerial responsibilities and it is not an issue. However, I am confused if the qualifying experience has to be of a functional manager which is going to be my new role in US? Does a person need to be playing a functional manager role in order to apply L1A under functional manager? Or, as is the case with me, valid evidence of qualifying experience in a managerial role is ok to apply for L1A under functional manager role.

Any insights on my case will be very helpful.

    Thanks,
    Vik

Based on what you mentioned about your current role, you do qualify for L1A. Go ahead, all the best !

of course perfectly fine, i dont see any issue, your firm needs to support your case how they are going to full fill your role in home country, and how you are going to support in new role, based on your description you are perfectly fine.

The functional manager is the person who has management authority within a business unit/department with direct supervision over one or more resources on the project/program team, and/or direct responsibility for the functions affected by or that affect the project/program deliverable(s). Difference between manager and Functional manager are always responsible for how their functions are carried out, and how their employees work to meet functional objectives. However, a line manager directly manages other employees and is responsible for administrative management of individuals.
