  • L1A - settling in US for long term

    Hi all,

We are thinking to move to US from Canada. However; I am not quite sure on how we would be able to work and settle in US for long term.
My company would be able to sponsor L1A; for my spouse we are still figuring out how she will move and work.

    Any insights would be helpful!!

    Hi Jamaz,

Once you are able to secure the L-1, there are certainly several pathways available for you to remain in the US for the long-term (i.e., beyond the 7 years for which your L-1A Visa will be available). One of the simplest ways is for you to secure an employment-based green card in the EB-1 category for multinational managers.

Your spouse will be able to move with you as an L-2 visa holder. When you apply for the green card, your spouse will also be able to apply for a green card with you. The same goes for any unmarried children who are under the age of 21 years.

That being said, depending on the size of your business, you should carefully consider whether the L-1 is in fact the best option for you. One of the requirements for the L-1 visa are that your business operations in Canada should continue when you move to the US.
