L1 and H1 - Validity Clarification Needed

I hold a valid L1 Visa (with Stamping) until Jan, 2012. However, I applied for a L1 -> H1 transfer this year in September and got my H1 approved until, Sep-2011 (from the same Company). If my H1 extension is not approved in September this year, my L1 will still be valid until Jan, 2012 or both of them will be invalidated? Please share your thoughts...

Are you in the US right now?
Are you talking about Visa in your passport or petition? Both are different things.

Approval of H1 petition does not invalidate the previous L1 petition or Visa. But if you are in the US, approval of H1 with new I-94 means your status is changed to H1.
