EAD and SSN

Hello All,

I am plannign to apply EAD for my spouse. Do we need to apply for SSN first to get EAD? And we have applied for SSN yesterday and SSA officer didn't ask for EAD card and they told we will get SSN in 4 weeks time. So now do i need to wait for SSN to apply for EAD? Is SSN mandatory to get EAD?

Or I can apply for both SSN and EAD at the same time? I appreciate your inputs because i am in a big confusion how to proceed now?

SSN is not needed for applying EAD. In fact, EAD is needed for SSN for H4 from a pending 485 to get SSN. L2 is an exception. L2 can get SSN before EAD.

Hello Txh1b,

Thanks for clearing the confusion. I am on L1. We have applied for SSN on L2 Yesterday. So can we apply for EAD now, not waiting for SSN because SSA officer told 4 weeks due to last name misspelling from Immigration.

But in EAD doc, item 9 is for SSN. So is this not mandatory to fill in our case?
Please throw some light.

i am in a similar situation.im on L2 visa...went to apply for ssn when they found out that my last name is incorrect in records.we've to go the office to get it corrected first.can u tell me how long will it take for the correction?2ndly can i apply for ead first ssn later?if yes then do i have to leave the ssn column empty in i-765 form..pls guide me.

SSN is not mandatory for EAD, i have applied for EAD with SSN blank. And we got the SSN also after the name correction. So go ahead and apply for your EAD without waiting for SSN.

thx for replying..can u pls tell how long does it take for the name to be corrected?can i apply for ead the same day that i go for name correction or i'll have to wait..plus can both the works be done at the same office?
