  • No Surname in Passport.. don't want to be another FNU

    Hi,
I have a problem similar to all the guys having a FNU in their Visa. I am in the process of filing for my L1.. at the time of filing my DS-160 realised the issue of having no surname.

I do not have a surname in any of my documents and everywhere I have used

"ZZZ YYY ZZZ" where "ZZZ" is my first name and "YYY ZZZ" is my fathers first name.

    Now i understand that I have 2 options :

    1) To include my surname by going through the change of name route (getting it published in the gazette and then changing the name in passport). It could also lead to issues such as changing my name in my educational documents etc. (which I am not sure whether it is necessary) and it would take me at least 30 days to get it done.

    2) It seems I can also split my name as "ZZZ"- first name and "YYY ZZZ" as my Surname in the passport (which is a simle procedure - 1 day). However I know that "YYY ZZZ" is not my surname but my father's name. would there be any issue if i do it that way.. cos in the space for father's name also I would be using as "YYY ZZZ" and for my father's surname I would be writing as unknown.

Kindly suggest the course of action to be taken

Splitting of name to indicate first and last names is the route. No need of publications or court orders for it.

Don't be another statistic for FNU!

I will suggest splitting it as ZZZ surname and YYYY YYY given names. That way whenever you have to spell out your last name it will be only one word. After all it is only a matter of convenience.

        Thanks both of you!

Even I am thinking of doing the same.. But are we sure there is no issue in that since I would be using my father's first name as my surname..

          @ kabkaba

That would be great as you said it.. however the whole of "YYY ZZZ" is my father's first name and splitting that in to half.. any issues on that?

Thanks guys for your quick response..

If it is two words I just suggested keeping the last name as one word. It does not matter what your father's name is. The choice is yours.

Make it ZZZ YYY so that your name appears as the first name followed by your father's name.

Once you have all 3 names listed, the way you want to split it on the passport would be your choice.

                  HI,
I spoke to a passport agent.. n he is telling me that using father's name as surname should not be done.. is that right? I am currently out of india so unable to go to the passport office and verify the procedure..

I know many people who have done it.

No Surname in Passport.. don't want to be another FNU

Recently I have been thro your situation.....Here is my advice
Make "ZZZZ" as your Surname and " YYYY YYYY" as your Given Name.

If you have time to Change the passport then do it else while entering US fill I-94 as "ZZZZ" as last name and " YYYY YYYY" as Given Name(irrespective of passport). In US Last name is mandatory(should have) and your I-94 is the basis of all the documents in US.

                      Thanks
