L1 to H1b

Iam on L1b visa which expires on sep 29th 2011. My company is in process of doing H1B for me. If the H1b is approved, it will be effective from oct 1st.
but my L1b visa expires on sep 29th, 1) Is it legal to stay in US on sep 30th as my H1b visa will be effective from oct 1st?
2) In case my h1b rejected can i apply for L1b extension?

That depends on the way petition is approved. If approved with I-94, you can stay and work from Oct 1.
