L1 Visa (exit with expired VIsa)

My application extension is still under process and i just have the "receipt notice" with me. I have a scheduled trip to home country, What is the risk of exiting with expired Visa? Please advise...

While exiting you need to show the extension receipt number, and hand over the current I94. But, you can enter into the country only after the decision is made with a fresh stamping. I think you can consult your employer or attorney for more details on this.
