Obtaining EAD (I-765) with an L2 VISA from the UK

My L2 visa arrived this morning and my wife and I are looking to move to the US in 2-3 months ... can anyone adivise if i can apply now (from the UK) for an EAD (using the I 765 e form) without having a social security number ? as i understand it can take up to 90 days to process an EAD and would like to start work as soon as i arrive..

Basically when i eventually arrive in the US i will apply for a SSN but would like to kick of the application for EAD now to save time

SSN is irrelevant. But for applying for EAD you must be present in the US in L2 status, you cannot apply from abroad.

Yes, 2 to 3 months is normal.
