L2 visa with pending of adjustment of status

i came into the USA on a L2 Visa and since then i have applied for an adjuctment of Status. when i applied my father was a citizen and my mother was a green card holder. i went to the interview and was told that my adjuctment of status is pending. while my adjustment was pending my L2 Visa expired. my question is am i an illegal immgrant now? i am applying to colleges right now and am i an international student (i spent all of high school and elementry school in the USA)? do i get financial aid when i fill out my FAFSA (do i get federal aid) and do i have to registrer for selective services when i turn 18 in 3 months?

As long as you have I-485 pending, you are in legal status.

As you are not permanent resident yet, you may not be eligible for the aid you are describing.
