L2 to L1

My spouse is on L2 visa in US working for his indian employer on EAD. he was working for same employer in india. His employer wants to file L1 visa for him now. My question is do my spouse need to travel back to India and then get visa stamped or transfer of status from L2 to L1 can be done from US itself.?

Change of status can be done here in the US. The employer just has to select the appropriate box in the form.
