Valid Visa is needed for traveling. So if you travel abroad after Visa expiry, you will need to obtain a new Visa in order to return.
do we need to request for the new visa or i can request for the extension for my current visa?

Just apply for the Visa at a US Consulate/Embassy like you did before. The process is the same whatever you call it new application, extension, renewal etc.
Remember there have been quite a few denials for blanket L1 Visas recently. Your company may want to file individual petition or H1B for you. This is my opinion and not legal advice.
