L1-individiual Visa Extension

Hi,
I am on an L1-individual visa and my visa expires on Jan25 2013. I want to go to india in August 2012, can i apply for my visa extension from India??
If i apply from india does it mean i have to file a new petition altogether and if its extension done from USA then is it done on the old petition itself?? Can you clarify

Extension is always a new petition. If done from U.S, the extension will come with a new I-94 allowing you to continue to work for the employer. If done from outside U.S, you need a valid L1 visa to return back. You will get a new I-94 at the POE. That is the only difference.
