My L1B is going to expire in DEC 2012..
what exactly is needed to extend to stay in USA..L1B petition or i-94 ??

If L1 is going to expire... you need to apply for Extension based on your number of years in US. In general, L1 visa is valid for 5 years.

You need to file the L1 extension. Extension of status can be filed 6 months prior to the I-94 expiry date. The extension will come with a new I-94 which will allow you to stay and work for the employer.
