Can I Visa holder get Driving Licence? (SSN)

I would like to know if I can get a social security number here in the US, it is necessary for obtaining a Driving License here. Or is it possible to get Driving License without Social Security number?

As a media representative I have the privilege to drive the company car for at times but without Driving license it is not possible to do so.

What are the benefits of Social Security Number anyway? Is this necessary for I-Visa holder?
