Need information on U visa

I will be going to the USA soon on a U Visa.
I read you can apply for a green card after 3 years continuous presence. Does that mean I cannot leave the country to even visit my family for 3 years if I wish to apply for a green card?

Continuous generally means nonstop... without a break... And you will have to show proof of your continuous presence in the US if you want to apply for a GC.
