VISA Time Limits

At church we have winter visitors from Canada. Apparently they are limited to a 6 month stay. The stay must not be over the start or finish of the calendar year. Most would like to come before the first snow, Newfoundland, and stay until the snow is gone. But this involves the year end so they can only come after January 1 and go home after 6 months. Any hope of the Canadian visitor coming in the fall and staying until Spring?
