Hello
I need to find the outcome of an I-539 application made in 2005. I had an H1B visa, due to expire but well in advance I applied for a change of status to B2 for a 6 month extra stay after the H1B was due to expire. 6 months after applying, I still hadn't received a receipt for this application although I have a copy of a letter my lawyer wrote on my behalf, asking for this receipt, or for the approval or denial of the application at the same time. I also have a photocopy of the check I wrote to USCIS, and a copy of the I539 application form.
If I never received a receipt, how can I discover the outcome of this application?
Is it true that in laws active in 2005 I was legal to remain in the States for 240 days after my H1B expired, if I had already filed my I539 and was awaiting a response? If so, can I be protected under this rule if I never received a receipt for my application?
