L1B visa expiring before I-94 becomes invalid

My husband's L1B visa is expiring in May 2011 and his I-94 is valid till Jan 2014.
I read that he will have problems in extension because extension is not approved if I-94 is still valid.

Anyone gone thru similar situation? Please guide.

If his I-94 is valid till 2014, he does not need new L1 petition until then.

But in case we fly out of US for any purpose like vacation then he wont be able to enter US again as he wont have valid visa or valid I-94.

So he wants to get his visa extended, I want to know what is the way to get it extended. Pls guide.
