  • Indian Citizenship for a US born child

We are expecting a baby in November 2012. Going through the Indian consulate website , I understand that I can register the birth of the Child in Indian Consulate and also apply for an Indian passport.

Do they issue a passport similar to that of an Indian citizen or will the passport bear PIO or OCI status?

In this case will the child be considered as an Indian Citizen and have all the privileges as that of an Indian citizen born in India?

Will the child be considered as a normal Indian citizen throughout her education or be considered as NRI?

Is the child eligible for governments jobs and to appear in civil services exam?

In this case, will the child born in USA and having an Indian passport be able to travel to USA with a valid visa any time in the future?

We have no intention of settling down in USA and hence we want the baby to be an Indian citizen.

    Regards,
    Ragav.

The child will be Indian citizen and will be provided with normal Indian passport.

Whether the child is NRI or not depends upon where the child lives. And all the questions are based on that.

U.S. will not issue U.S. visa to U.S. citizen and will need to apply for the U.S. passport.

In short, you can't have the best of both worlds. You need to make the decision one way or the other.
