I am moving to the US in the fall to study on an F1 visa. My husband is a priest and would like to obtain an R1 visa long term. We have only recently finalised where in the USA we will be living and he does not have a job lined up yet. We are concerned that the process of finding a position and obtaining an R1 visa may be too drawn out for us to move together in September, so we are considering applying for an F2 visa for him in the meantime to hopefully ensure that we can both move in September, and then applying for an R1 visa once he has found a position.
We would appreciate any advice on the best way to proceed in this situation: would it be better to apply directly for the R1? How soon after applying for an F2 is it possible to apply for an R1 if he receives a job offer soon after submitting an F2 application? Would the fact that he wants to change to an R1 later on affect the outcome of the F2 application if it came up in the interview?
Thank you for your help!
