F2 I-94 while applying for OPT

Hello,
I am currently on F1 while my husband is on F2. I applied for my OPT. The immigration counselor at school told me that as long as my F1 is valid, my husband's F2 is also valid. However, he has an ending date stamped on his I-94 which is the date of my graduation. Does he automatically get status if I apply for OPT? If yes, does he need to get a new I-94?

He should go to a CBP deferred inspection post (nearby International Airport, check CBP.gov) and try to get the I-94 corrected to D/S in stead of a fixed date.
If that does not work, he can leave the US and return (go to Canada/Mexico) to get a new I-94.
