Visa expired last August!

I am a student here at USA. My visa expired last year in August 2012. Should it be renewed within certain time once it expires? I'm planning to go somewhere in Feb of next year to get it renewed. Would that be OK?

I'm on F1 status. I came in US in Aug 2007, then in 2010 I transferred to another university. My I-20 is valid till 2015, but my visa got expired last year in August.

Ok. I am sorry but help me understand, do you not have an I-94? How long is that valid for?
