I am seeking information on behalf of an 8th grade student that I am teaching in Vietnam. This girl functions in English at an intermediate level (CEFR B2) which is quite high for her grade level in this country. It seems that most of the information that I find online regarding student visas mostly relates to university or post-graduate levels. Here are some of her circumstances and some questions.
1. She has relatives in Virginia who wish for her to study at the same public school as her cousin for some portion of her high school years. She wishes to live with them, so a J-1 visa will not work as I believe the J-1 prohibits staying with relatives. I understand and have told her that she will have to pay the cost even though it is a public school.
2. How does she go about gaining admission to a public high school in order to seek a F visa? Can her relatives seek admission on her behalf? Is a letter from a high school principal sufficient to qualify for a visa?
3. Does she have to make the visa application herself or is it made by her uncle as a sponsor? Can her uncle be the financial guarantor for her payment of school costs?
4. Will she have to take some type of standardized test in English for a visa if she was to enter say grade 10? I teach TOEFL iBT and IELTS to university and adult students but I feel the subject matter would be unfairly difficult for someone her age despite her relatively high language level.
5. Are there limits to the number of High School years that she can study? If she reaches this level, will she be able to reapply for another visa to go to college in the US?
Thank you
