    Is it possible to apply and get student visa of some type to join local public high school - or are student Visa's only available only for upper level schools/universities etc?
    Is it difficult/long process to apply for student Visa?

    Yes it is possible, however public schools only allow students to attend for one year under a student visa, and they must pay the full, unsubsidized tuition fee, unlike U.S. citizens, who do not need to pay. After that year, if the student plans to continue in high school, he must apply instead to a private high school.

    Long or difficult depends on who is dealing with it. There is a learning curve, but for me, it was only a matter of taking the time to find the right information; the steps were not difficult, but I needed time figure everything out.
