  • Clarification regarding i20 name

Recently I have got an admit in USA for pursuing my Masters in Fall 2015. But I have little bit of problem with respect to the name issued in my i20.

My full name in passport is:-

    Surname – varadarajar swaminathan
    Given Name - vaishnnavi priya

But in the Machine readable zone of the passport it is like this,

    < varadarajar< swaminathan <<vaishnnavi pri

The last two characters ‘y’ and ‘a’ are truncated due to the character limit in the MRZ zone of the passport.

The university has issued me i20 based on the machine readable zone of the passport i.e without the two characters ‘y’ and ‘a’.

Now I am stuck up right here and I enquired the same to many people around but I am not getting a perfect answer for this. I confirmed with the university and they told me that as per their rules they need to issue i20 in the name as per the MRZ of the passport.

Now I would like to take some help from you regarding this, i.e while making the SEVIS payment and for filing VISA how am I supposed to enter my name, should it be as per i20 (i.e MRZ of the passport leaving two characters) or should it be as per Visual Inspection Zone of the passport (i.e complete name)? Kindly help. Please.

If the application for the Sevis and the F1 are asking for your name, you should enter your name regardless of what your I-20 says.
