H1 to F1

I am currently on H1 visa (have been on it for two years now). I have applied for admission to PhD program. How do I convert from the H1 status to F1 ? I would like to go to India before I start my PhD ? Should I apply for an adjustment of status as soon as I receive my I20 here ? Should I just get my visa stamped when I visit India ?

Better in India. PhD students generally rececive a 5-6 year visa stamping.

My current employment is valid until September 06 and my school doesnt begin until September 06. I would like to maximize my time at the current employment and hence I am thinking filing for an adjustment of status is a good idea. However, two questions arise.

1. Can I leave the country while my adjustment of status is being processed ?
2. How long will it take for the adjustment of status to be approved ?

Assuming I cannot be employed as a Research Assistant until my status gets approved is it better for me to just visit India and obtain an F1 visa ?

Please advise.
