B2 to F1, while B2 extension pending.

Hello,
I entered the country on a B2 status, after 5 moths I extended it. It has been 5 months since I filed for the extension and the B2 status is still pending. I want to change my status to F1 but I am not sure if I can do that before my B2 expiration date comes out. Does anybody have any experience with a situation like this ?
