need assistance

Hi, we are sponsoring a niece to come to the US and go to college. She had her interview at the US Embassy in her country and was given a note saying she (we) needed proof of finances to cover her first year. We gave them 3 months of bank statements, we are not sure what they want as proof. Can you tell us what we we are to show to them--is there a form?
