Someone I know who fell out of status in their school is in immigration custody. They were in the process of reapplying for reinstatement. Please tell me if there is any hope, or will this person surely be deported? What steps should they take in order to stay in the country? Thank you

Placing someone in custody is somewhat uncommon for a simple overstay (as compared to "undocumented" status). There is probably more to this than you are aware, such as very long time since visa or status expired, or previous failure to follow up with USCIS contacts, etc.

Unfortunately this person was picked up at work, where they should not have been working. My suspicions are that this person was reported. They have been placed in immigration custody. This person's student visa expires in 2017, however they had not been attending school thus fell out of status. They were in the process of applying for reinstatement. Someone told me they will just review the papers and let them go. Is it so, or will they be deported? Thank you
