What would happen if F1 terminated before H4 approved?

My wife is in graduate school and is holding F1 visa right now. She has submitted application to change to H4 visa last month and should get the approval notice after September.

She does not want to register classes this fall but this will invalidate her F1 status when the Fall semester starts.

The question is, if she got the H4 application approved after her F1 status terminated this fall, can she still register for classes in the next Spring semester as a H4 student?

She would be in legal status.

However, she can register for the classes once H4 is approved.
