  • Changing i2o requirements

My son is studying in US with F1 visa. He transferred to another university and after finishing one semester they informed him he has to get a new I20. The problem is that his passport expired and he has to wait for about 6 weeks to get a new passport from his home country. During that period he will be studying in his university, he is already registered and paid part of the fees but the new I20 will not be issued until he gets the valid passport. ( He has a valid visa until 2018)
My question is : Is his stay in the US now legitimate? If not should he return to his home country and get the new passport himself and then get new I20 before travelling back to US? If he has to do so, should he apply for a new visa because he changed the I20 although his visa is still valid?
