  • Inappropriate CIP code in I-20 (Public Health, General vs Environmental Health)

    Hello everyone,
I am an international student from Bangladesh and completed Master of Public Health with majoring Environmental Health in last year from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Currently, I am on Optional Practical Training (OPT) and doing an environmental health related job. In my I-20s (including OPT I-20), the code is written: 51.2201 that represents Public Health, General. According to NCES website (CIP 2010 coding system), CIP code for Public Health is: 51.22 and under this broad heading – Public Health – a group of programs is defined in codes ranging from 51.2201 to 51.2299. However, Environmental Health code is: 51:2202 which is one of programs under Public Health (51.22). Environmental Health (51:2202) major is in STEM list; however, Public Health, General (51.2201) is not. Environmental health is one of majors under public health, but it is represented by different code. According to my graduate curriculum and transcript, my completed graduate courses were very closely similar to the definition under the title: Environmental Health (CIP code 51.2202) in NCES website. I am pretty sure that I completed all most all relevant environmental health courses to be eligible for the CIP code 51:2202 which represents environmental health, not public health, general, because environmental health is still under the broad heading of Public Health. I believe that an inappropriate CIP code is written on my I-20. I contacted my DSO to solve this issue, but she denied it. At this moment, I need advice and help to solve it. Thank you in advance. Have a great day!

It's really not clear from your thread - if you *majored* in Public Health, that's what your major is.

Your minor does not matter for purposes of STEM OPT, and the DSO has no obligation whatsoever to change your major since that's not what you majored in.

Thanks for your input. In my I-20, it is written: Public Health, General; in my graduate transcript, it is written: Master of Public Health: Environmental Health. Why should it not be considered as a mismatch?
