  • Coming to study in US on F-1 visa with a dependent single mother

Hello, I have planned to study in US on F-1 visa. But my question is how can I manage to take my single mother with me? Since I'm the only child, I have to take care of her. An option I have found out is the B-2 (tourist) visa, but after a while it gets expired and I cannot let her leave on her own. Is there any other option for a dependent mother to stay with me in the US?

In theory, B-2 can be used for household members of people in other nonimmigrant statuses, including parents of students, and they can be initially admitted for 1 year, and apply for extension of status in 6-month increments. However, I haven't heard of anyone using this and I am not sure how hard this actually is to get.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.
