Travel outside US while STEM OPT extension is pending

I'm planning to travel outside the US while my STEM OPT extension is pending and return a few days before my current EAD expires. I'm trying to assess all risks before finalizing my travel plan.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Did you have a problem during re-entry?

What does your ISO/DSO say about it?

My DSO says that I can travel as long as I return before my current EAD card expires. However, my company's law firm has advised me against it as they see a big risk. So I have two conflicting opinions!
