  • gaining legal work on f1 student visa

Can you please offer me some advise.

My two daughters currently study in america from australia.

One is in her second year about to finish And one is about to finish her third year.

They would like to stay in america over the summer and we are trying to work out if they can work during the summer legally and if so how do we gain permission for them to do so.

Thank you so much for your assistance

Are your daughters both on F1? If so, they can apply for OPT (if they qualify) and should contact their International Offices (they handle that).

      Aussie Mum,

I went through this process myself. First, they must get a SSN. To do this, they need to apply and get hired for a job that is associated with the school. The international services department of their school should be able to help them with the forms. I needed a SSN and the only way I could get one was getting hired by the school. I went and gave an elevator pitch to athletic director and was hired as a grunt worker for the basketball area. Also, extremely important is that on an F1, they CANNOT work more than 20 hours a pay period. If they do, the visa is revoked.

      Good luck to them!
